At Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, retired educator Martin Buchman, 65, is advocating for safer cycling through the Long Island Greenway Trail initiative. Scheduled for groundbreaking in 2025, this nearly 200-mile path aims to provide cyclists with dedicated infrastructure, reducing conflicts with motor vehicles..

Daniel Flanzig, a board member of NYBC and Buchman's legal advisor, emphasizes the urgent need for improved cyclist protections. Speaking at the Walk Bike LI Summit, he highlighted alarming statistics: In 2023 alone, Nassau County recorded 421 bicycle-related crashes, resulting in 358 injuries and one fatality.

The ambitious Long Island Greenway Trail, set to connect Manhattan to Orient and Montauk Points, will span 60% off-road, integrating with public transportation to serve 27 local communities. Spearheaded by the Trust for Public Land, this multimillion-dollar endeavor underscores a collective push for safer, more accessible cycling options across the region.

As Long Island progresses toward a more cyclist-friendly future, initiatives like the Greenway Trail offer hope for reducing accidents and fostering a culture of road safety for all.
